Service life of a water-miscible cutting fluid depends on very many factors as concentration is used and it’s maintenance, start water parameters and quality, product biostability, tramp oil leakages, material is machined, metal cutting operations, volume of fluid in the system, filtration effectiveness is used, downtimes and service brakes during the process, environment cleanliness etc.
In general metal working fluids work around 1 year in the system, however the same product can work even 4 years without replacement or 3 months only depends on impact of other factors.
pH level of water miscible fluid in the system, impurities level, cleanliness of the system, start water parameters, corrosion issues, machine producer recommendations are main factors which decide about time to replace coolant.
Boron and chlorine components are not desirable in metalworking fluid because of their harmful effect. Boron acid in metalworking fluid is toxic for reproduction. Chlorine components, chloroparaffins with medium- and long-chains, which used as EP additives in metal cutting fluids, are heavy environmental pollutants which have potential for bioaccumulation. FUCHS uses health and environmentally friendly alternative additives in metalworking fluids.
There are water miscible metalworking fluids which are possible to use for machining of different metals. Ecocool AFC 1515 LC from FUCHS is relevant to use for aluminum, steel , alloy steel, yellow metals and cast iron cutting operations in many applications. Ecocool Global 10 is possible to use for heavy operations on aluminum alloys, even aeronautic, titanium, steel and alloy steel, yellow metals. However using more specialized product for each material group is more effective due to optimized properties like lubricity level, anticorrosion properties, compatibility and some others, which are required for different materials types.
It is important to remember that type of operation, start water parameters, coolant pressure in the system and total volume are also important for coolant selection.
