ILSAC GF-6

Founded in 1992, the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) is an organization through which Ford, General Motors, Chrysler and the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA) develop minimum performance standards for passenger car engine oils used in gasoline fueled engines.

The ILSAC standards, denoted by the terminology ILSAC GF-x, are based upon the API service categories and bring additional performance requirements, as fuel economy improvement, and restrictions in the viscosity grades that may claim to meet an ILSAC standard.

In July 2019, the API officially announced May 1, 2020 as the first license date of the new ILSAC GF-6 and API SP specifications.

ILSAC GF-6A specification would replace the current ILSAC GF-5 specification, represented by the starburst/certification trademark, and would provide a new performance level of an engine oil for spark-ignited internal combustion engines. The characteristics of GF-6A are the following:

• Backwards compatible with older engines
• Better durability to mitigate LSPI
• Good fuel economy: measured by Sequence VIE
• Covers the following viscosity grades: SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30
• For XW-20: minimum HTHS = 2.6; for XW-30: minimum HTHS = 2.9

ILSAC GF-6B will provide the same performance as GF-6A, but with the added aim of lower HTHS to deliver potential further fuel economy benefits. The characteristics of GF-6B include the following:

• Not backwards compatible with older engines
• Better durability to mitigate LSPI
• Better fuel economy: measured by Sequence VIF
• Covers only SAE 0W-16 viscosity grade with minimum HTHS = 2.3

FUCHS LUBRICANTS has currently 3 products with the new ILSAC GF-6A specification. These products are: TITAN GT1 FLEX 5 SAE 0W-20, TITAN SuperSyn D1 SAE 5W-30 and TITAN SuperSyn D1 SAE 0W-20.
