Noise Reduction in Railway Traffics

The focus of mobility is on rail transportation, but the accompanying noise is being viewed more and more critically. At a time when protection from emissions and noise pollution are becoming increasingly important, rail noise reduction is crucial.

Causes of rail noise

Rail noise, especially the dreaded curve squealing, is caused by transverse forces which pull the vehicle outwards and at the same time tracking forces are created on the wheel flange which hold the vehicle on the curve. These forces give rise to very small slipping movements of the wheels in lateral direction, which with the material pairing of metal on metal can lead to high frequency squealing noise. Longitudinal slip can also cause squealing or creaking noise.

Challenges for operators

Traffic operators are faced with the task of dealing with complaints from local residents about noise and local authority regulations on noise emissions, particularly in curves and at turning points.

Traditional solutions often focus on complex, blanket constructive measures, while a simple but effective method is often overlooked: treatment of the rail surface with suitable rail head treatment products to optimize the coefficient of friction.

Leading the way: top of rail friction modifier for silence and efficiency

LOCOLUB ECO PLUS and GLEITMO RFL ECO are two innovative top of rail friction modifiers designed to reduce noise in curves, in addition to lubricating the rail flanks. The use of these lubricants with a relatively high content of special solids and proven adhesion creates a fine film of solids. The result is minimal reduction from the friction between wheel and rail, without removing the frictional connection.

Driving toward certified sustainability

Our modern solutions not only make rail transport quieter, but also more sustainable. LOCOLUB ECO PLUS and GLEITMO RFL ECO are EU Ecolabel certified and free from environmentally critical additives, including metallic particles, microplastics and PFAS. These outstanding product characteristics have led to our product LOCOLUB ECO PLUS being positively assessed and approved for use by the relevant water authority in the capital region. This is a significant step forward in our sustainable product development.
