Bumper competition for Brown’s British Rallycross return
Rochdale driver Steve Brown will face tough competition in this years Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy Presented by Cooper Tires as he kicks off his season in the BMW MINI series at the Lydden Hill circuit in Kent this weekend (29-30 May).
A packed grid of eighteen drivers will line up in the hotly contested single-make championship, over double the number from the last time Brown contested the series in 2019. He will line up in his FUCHS LUBRICANTS backed MINI in a bid to better his third place overall in the championship last time out, but with a bumper entry, it will be a tough ask even for the accomplished driver.
“I`m really excited to be back out competing again after such a tough year for everyone really,” said Brown.
“All forms of motorsport have suffered and so it's been hard to commit to any championship or discipline so I haven’t worked myself up too much about the prospect of coming back to Rallycross. After all, I`m a rally driver at heart but it's certainly been the right decision to return to the circuits and with such a huge entry, it's going to be a mountain to climb to improve on my podium of 2019”.
Brown is a regular on the stages of Europe and the UK but a one-off guest appearance in the BTRDA Rallycross series in 2017 offered a new avenue to explore with a full campaign in the British Championship being offered in 2019 within the close competition BMW MINI series.
His maiden season was an impressive one, overcoming a technical glitch during the opening round to take several podium spots throughout the year and secure the final championship podium place at the close of the season. He will be aiming to use his experience from 2019 to get a better start to his campaign this time around.
“I spent a lot of time learning the processes, how everything works and the circuits in 2019 so was a little reserved on the track really,” he says.
“By the end of the season I'd settled in and I really could push and once I had the result came so I`m hoping I can pick up where I left off. I think with the huge grids that we are looking at it will be a tall order to expect race wins or anything like that but being consistent and building with each meeting will be the key. Limiting the mistakes should enable me to push for at least a podium and using my knowledge of the track and racecraft will help as well."
