Lift off for FUCHS Lubricants and the GOES-U Satellite

FUCHS is once again headed to space, or at least our lubricants are! The GOES-U satellite, which stands for Geostationary Environmental Satellites, uses lubricants from FUCHS’ Special Applications line and is scheduled to launch on June 25th from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The GOES-U satellite is the fourth and final satellite to launch in the GOES-R series of satellites, a joint effort between NASA and NOAA that aims to provide more accurate forecasts, real-time mapping of lightning activity, and improved monitoring of solar activity and the environment. Once the GOES-U satellite enters geostationary orbit it will henceforth be known as GOES-19 or GOES-East as it will be responsible for monitoring the eastern half of the Western Hemisphere.

The reaction wheels and solar array drives on each satellite in the GOES-R series are lubricated with SYNTHETIC OIL 2001-3PB, RHEOLUBE 2000, and RHEOLUBE 2004.  Reaction wheels help adjust and maintain the orientation of a satellite to ensure sensors, antennas, and other instruments are directed toward their intended targets for accurate data collection. Solar array drives play an equally critical role in the positioning the satellites solar panels in such a way to maximize the energy stored to power the mission.

Multiply-alkylated cyclopentane (MAC) lubricants, like those on the GOES-R series, offer the unique combination of extreme wear protection, low outgassing, and additive compatibility for optimal performance in space applications. This helps ensure the lubricant performs reliably under vacuum for the entirety of the satellites’ operational life. The GOES-U satellite will replace GOES-16, the first satellite in the series launched in 2016, and will remain operational into the 2030’s.

The GOES-R series uses advanced imagery technology to rapidly scan the earth with updates available as soon as every 30 seconds, providing forecasters with near real-time insights. “Detecting storm systems early is critical for authorities and first responders preparing against severe weather and natural disasters,” says Tony Dotson, Aerospace Segment Leader at FUCHS Lubricants Co. “At FUCHS our lubrication solutions are just MOVING YOUR WORLD they’re also helping to capture it!”
